Methanol dual fuel Volvo Penta D16 type approval tests successfully completed

We have successfully completed type approval tests on the methanol dual-fuel Volvo D16! Last week, our CEO, Patrik Molander, led the type approval testing, which was successfully completed and witnessed by DNV. We are incredibly proud of our whole team’s role in the design, development, and certification process. New level unlocked!

Highlights:

  • The first high speed methanol dual fuel engine tested for type approval
  • Comprehensive test program included high and low power trials, validating safe engine responses to simulated failures in both methanol and diesel operating modes.
  • Full power delivery was demonstrated in both diesel and dual fuel modes, confirming true dual-fuel capabilities and operational safety
  • The engine version is prepared for variable speed and can be used either for variable speed generator applications or direct propulsion
  • Dimensions of base engine remain largely unchanged

Type approval tests are essential for certifying that a marine engine design meets all regulatory and technical standards. This process involves rigorous evaluation of performance, safety, and reliability, ensuring that every engine produced thereafter conforms to the approved specification. By successfully completing these tests, we set a benchmark for sustainable methanol technology in marine applications.
