Pivotal methanol conversion project

Stena Germanica: world's first methanol powered ferry

In 2015, the Stena Germanica revolutionized the maritime industry by becoming the world’s first RoPax vessel with dual capabilities, running on both diesel and methanol.

This pioneering transformation was inspired by the findings of the Effship project, identifying methanol as a promising marine fuel, and validated through the successful implementation of a methanol system on the Stena Scanrail during the SPIRETH project.

The decision to convert the Stena Germanica’s main engines to methanol was supported by the expertise of ScandiNAOS AB, actively engaged from the project’s initiation, overseeing the design process and ensuring adherence to regulations.
