We are thrilled to share our sister company ScandiNAOS AB has received a groundbreaking order for four methanol-diesel dual-fuel gensets from Freire Shipyard in Vigo, Spain. The system will be used on Greenpeace’s new 75-meter vessel featuring advanced green technologies, including methanol power propulsion system, fuel cells, battery storage and sails.
The gensets will be based on the Volvo Penta 16L diesel engine with permanent magnet generators. The engines will be fitted with a dual fuel system allowing the replacement of diesel with renewable methanol.
Delivery of the dual fuel gensets is scheduled for winter 25/26.
“This is a major development step for enabling replacement of fossil fuel with renewable produced methanol. The dual fuel concept developed by ScandiNAOS AB is in this case applied to a Volvo Penta D16 engine but can be adopted and optimized for any diesel engine. We are excited to support Freire Shipyard and Greenpeace for minimizing the climate and environmental impact from shipping” said Bengt Ramne Managing Director of ScandiNAOS AB.
As Freire Shipyard announced on their webpage: ” On 3 July 2025, Freire Shipyard laid the keel for Greenpeace International new flagship. The 75-metre sailing vessel, with almost 2,000 square metres of sail area, will be equipped with a hybrid propulsion system that will include hydrogen fuel cells and engines capable of using methanol as fuel, which will significantly reduce the use of fossil fuels and minimise its carbon footprint. ” To read the full announcement, click here.
