The Swedish pilot boat 790 has been converted to methanol-diesel dual-fuel operation. The two Volvo Penta D16 engines have been equipped with dual-fuel conversion kits and the fuel, ventilation, drain and control systems have been upgraded for methanol operation. The pilot boat will be stationed at Kalmar pilot station servicing the piloting of vessels between Öland and the mainland.
The project is the first of its kind and is paving the way towards sustainable shipping by providing the ability to upgrade existing vessels to methanol operation by fitting dual-fuel conversion kit to conventional diesel engines.
The dual-fuel kits for the pilot boat are fitted on the existing Volvo Penta D16 engines, but the unique feature of the kit is that it is generic and can be adopted to a large range of existing diesel engines of different brands.
The development of the dual fuel kit is the result of the CoMeBust-ME project which was executed by our sister company ScandiNAOS AB in collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology for the Swedish Maritime Administration. The project was partly funded by Vinnova through the FFI program with contribution from the industry via Proman and the Methanol Institute.
Bengt Ramne, Manager Director ScandiNAOS AB: “We are very pleased with the performance of the dual fuel kit we have developed and excited to continue our great co-operation with the Swedish Maritime Administration to reduce the carbon footprint of their fleet.”
