Fugro Pioneer

2 x MD97 single fuel methanol engines onboard Fugro Pioneer

Check the video above to hear what Michiel, Naval Architect closely involved in this project, has to say about his work with converting Fugro Pioneer to methanol. Great success, congratulations!

Enmar Engines onboard Fugro Pioneer

Enmar Engines is at the forefront of innovation in the maritime industry, providing technology solutions for vessels converting to methanol operations. This time, it is Fugro’s special operations research vessel, the Fugro Pioneer. She’s got her name quite fitting as the first of its kind to be equipped with methanol only engines! The conversion of Fugro Pioneer to methanol fuel is one big step closer to achieving net-zero operations by 2035 in Fugro company, and Enmar Engines is proud to support them on this revolutionary journey.

The Fugro Pioneer is a 54 m long research vessel, with beam of 12.5 m and 1327 t gross tonnage. It is built in 2014, in Damen Shipyard. Fast forward 10 years, she is undergoing modifications to methanol power system! Enmar Engines supplied two methanol MD97 engines that will replace two of the vessel’s four original engines. This conversion is expected to bring significant environmental benefits. By transitioning to methanol, Fugro aims to reduce carbon emissions by over 90% compared to conventional diesel. Additionally, nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions are projected to drop by up to 90%, helping to lower the vessel’s overall environmental impact.

As the maritime industry increasingly explores alternative fuels, Enmar Engines is ready to support this transition. We hope success of this project serves as example across the industry!
